New Virginia Candidates


In the last week, VPAP has added five names to its unofficial lists of candidates running for State Senate and House of Delegates. VPAP also removed one incumbent, Del. Matt Fariss (R-Campbell).

State Senate

Senate District 4 (Roanoke)

DA Pierce is the third candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Democrats Luke Priddy and Trish White-Boyd are also running. Sen. Dave Suetterlein (R-Salem), is the only Republican candidate so far. SD 4 includes Roanoke and Salem cities, as well as portions of Roanoke and Montgomery counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 54.7% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 7 (Southside)

Deborah Gates is the first candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Sen. Bill Stanley (R-Moneta) is the only Republican running so far. SD 7 includes Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Grayson, Henry, Patrick counties, as well as Galax and Martinsville cities. It also includes part of Wythe County. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 74.9% of the vote in November 2021.

Senate District 35 (Fairfax County)

Mark Vafiades is the first candidate seeking the Republican nomination. Sen. Dave Marsden (D-Burke) and Heidi Drauschak are seeking the Democratic nomination in the district that includes part of Fairfax County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 65.3% of the vote in November 2021.

House of Delegates

House District 8 (Fairfax County)

Max Fisher is the first candidate seeking the Republican nomination. Del. Irene Shin (D-Herndon) is the only Democratic candidate running so far. HD 8 includes part of Fairfax County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 65.8% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 47 (Southwest)

Patty Quesenberry is the first candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. Two delegates, Del. Marie March (R-Floyd) and Del. Wren Williams (R-Stuart), are paired in this district. Both are seeking the Republican nomination. HD 47 includes Carroll, Floyd, and Patrick counties, as well as Galax City. It also includes part of Henry County. VPAP rates this a "strong Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 78.7% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 51 (Lynchburg area)

Del. Matt Fariss (R-Campbell) did not meet the deadline for the party’s nominating event, according to Cardinal News. This makes Eric Zehr the Republican nominee. No Democrat has filed for this “strong Republican” district, which includes parts of Campbell, Bedford and Pittsylvania counties. VPAP estimates that Gov. Glenn Youngking won 79.2% of the vote in 2021.
