The food truck court outside the Washington Redskins training camp sat empty Sunday.
Of the original three vendors, two have been moved to locations near the camp’s entrance, while Strawberry Street Cafe has decided not to return.
Strawberry Street owner Ron Joseph had kind words for Lesa Williams, who set up the court on behalf of management company SMG, but added that the location simply wasn’t drawing the traffic he needed to succeed.
Joseph had agreed to set up on the opening weekend and other high-traffic days and to add more dates if the attendance justified it, something he said didn’t happen at the food truck’s out-of-the-way location.
Attendance has been down at this year’s camp relative to past years, and the commerce around the facility has reduced accordingly.
The first four days of camp averaged 4,525 attendees, well off the pace of previous years — the first year averaged 10,815 fans over that span, while last year’s camp averaged 7,526 in the first four days.
The reason could involve a combination of factors, including the team’s poor performance over the past two years. In response to lower ticket demand, several thousand seats were removed from the team’s home stadium, FedEx Field.
Other entertainment options also are available. In three of the first four days of camp, the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball team has drawn a larger crowd than the Redskins.
City officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday night.
Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie did not directly address the waning attendance, but spoke of the enthusiasm of the crowds and said the team’s commitment to Richmond remains unwavering.
He cited the multiple events the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation was running with players while the team is in town, as well as the fact that each player selects a child from the crowd to spend time with at the end of every practice.
“Thus far this year, we’ve given 720 kids the experience of a lifetime,” he said. “Plus there will be more than a dozen community events” in the three weeks that the team is in Richmond.
Even when attendance levels were higher, the city was struggling to meet its financial obligations to the team, and a portion of its revenues this year were dependent on drumming up business at the food trucks.
This was the second year of the outside food truck court, which was designed to give local businesses the opportunity to participate in Redskins camp, as well as to help fund the city’s $500,000 annual payment to the Redskins. This year, vendors were asked to pay $500 to set up, a steep cut from last year’s $2,500 fee.
Even without the fee, Joseph said his truck wasn’t going to be financially viable, given the crowds.
The other two vendors lined up by SMG, Ronnie’s BBQ and Tiki Ice, have been moved to locations closer to the entrance.
The Redskins are optimistic that there will be a spike in attendance this weekend, as the Houston Texans and star defender J.J. Watt visit for three days of joint practices, beginning Thursday.
