Once the final ballots for this year’s November elections are in and counted, all eyes will shift to Virginia’s gubernatorial race. Just last week, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears filed paperwork to seek the Republican nomination for governor next year. ( VPAP's VaNews )

Did you know that some candidates start their campaigns nearly four years ahead of the election?

Read on to discover whether this is a winning strategy, how to engage your students in thoughtful discussions around it, and a breakdown of resources tailored for both high school and middle school students.

Is Early Campaigning the Key to Success?

Explore the answer with your students through VPAP’s interactive data visualization, “ When Does Gubernatorial Fundraising Start?"

Within the visual, students can hover over the blue, red, and yellow shapes to learn more about each candidate data point.

Engage Your Students in Thoughtful Discussion

We've prepared discussion prompts to guide your class through the visualization above. You’ll find versions for both high school and middle school, each offering ten tailored prompts.

  • For High Schoolers: These questions challenge students to analyze the data, think critically about campaign strategies, and ponder the broader implications for our democratic process.

  • For Middle Schoolers: The prompts are more straightforward, focusing on direct observations from the graph and encouraging students to consider the implications without needing advanced political knowledge.

Students can easily make a copy of the editable template and submit their responses through your school’s learning management system, like Canvas or Schoology.

Encourage Student Choice

Student choice often unlocks curiosity. Consider letting your students pick 3-5 questions to answer or work in pairs. Then, bring the class together to share their insights.
