Briefs & Currents

September 17th, 2024
Did you know that in 2007 the Virginia General Assembly designated this week -- the third week in September -- as Civics Education Week in Virginia?

Celebrating Civics Education Week and Constitution Day today, we put together a visual comparing the Virginia and United States Constitutions.

How do the VA and US Constitutions compare?

Explore the similarities and differences with your students through VPAP’s visual, Comparing Constitutions."

Extend Student Learning Through Inquiry

Aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning, we've prepared a digital interactive notebook that includes the following versatile prompts to guide your learners (grades 6-12) through the visual above.

  • Questions demonstrating foundational knowledge
  • Prompts sparking student curiosity and the start of self-guided research
  • Exploration of high-quality sources
  • Opportunities to build upon learning by creating an expanded visual
Comparing Constitutions Interactive Notebook

Encourage Student Choice

Motivate students by giving them the option to work in pairs or small teams on the more advanced questions in the interactive notebook activities.

For instance, students could divide and conquer the source exploration table on slides 5 and 6 in the interactive notebook. Then, discuss what they learned with each other.

Learners could also collaborate on taking the Comparing Constitutions visual to the next level (second half of the interactive notebook).
