How Election Maps can be Deceiving

"Check out this Virginia map with the 2020 presidential election results. Who do you think won Virginia: Biden in blue, or Trump in red? The map is mostly red, but Biden still won. How could that be? Don't worry, this isn't about fake news or stolen elections. The reason is simple: our map doesn't account for population density. Cities tend to have dense populations and so a lot of votes, while rural areas have a lot of land but fewer people. That's why Alexandria, which shows up as a tiny blue dot in Northern Virginia, had four times as many votes as Halifax County, which is a huge red block in Southside Virginia. Now let's see these same results on a chart where each Virginia locality is a rectangle sized by the number of votes cast. Let's start with the big urban areas: Biden swept them. Now the suburbs: Trump took some here, but they still mostly went for Biden. Here are the rural areas: almost all of them for Trump. Virginia has elections every year.
