Rural Counties Lead Turnout Gains

Voter participation saw its largest gains this election season in Virginia's rural areas energized by President Trump. The length of each bar represents the percentage points that turnout changed this year compared to 2016. The color represents the presidential candidate (Trump or Biden) who carried each locality.

Methodology: VPAP compared voter turnout (number of ballots cast/number of registered voters) for each of Virginia's 133 cities and counties in 2020 and 2016. The formula for the number presented is (Percent turnout 2020) minus (Percent turnout 2016).
