'Abortion Pill' Use Increasing in Virginia

The number of abortions performed each year in Virginia has seen little change, but medication approved by the FDA in 2020 now accounts for the majority of terminated pregnancies, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Source: Virginia Department of Health. The number of abortions performed in Virginia has remained relatively unchanged over the last six years, averaging about 16,000 a year during that period. The VDH uses the terminology of "induced termination of pregnancy" to mean "the intentional interruption of pregnancy with the intention to produce other than a live-born infant or to remove a dead fetus and which does not result in a live birth."
