A Different Perspective on Turnout

Voter participation was up nearly everywhere this year. But what does that look like on a map where each of Virginia's 133 localities is sized according to the number of registered voters? (Click to enlarge the image. Look closely, as localities have shifted westward to make room for densely populated Northern Virginia.)

A map of Virginia showing 2021 voter turnout. Each locality is sized proportionately to the number of registered voters. Increased turnout is shown in shades of purple. The more turnout, the darker the locality is shaded.

Map Methodology: Each city and county is sized according to the number of registered voters in October 2021.

How Turnout Change Was Calculated: (Percentage of voters in each locality who cast ballots in the 2021 general election) MINUS (Percentage of voters who cast ballots in the 2017 general election)
