The Cost of Winning Local Elections
Note: Based on spending in 2019. Includes only candidates who ran in localities with populations greater than 70,000 and who are required to e-file campaign finance disclosure reports. Arlington, which has a unique County Board form of government, is listed with Board of Supervisors.
Virginia law exempts candidates from filing campaign finance reports if they do not accept contributions from others, and do not raise or spend more than $1,000 of their own money. Winners who filed for exemption: Randy Carter for Suffolk Clerk of Court, Donald Butzer for Roanoke County School Board, Linda Smith for Hampton Clerk of Court, Susan Kirby for Bedford County School Board, and Wes Nance for Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
