Turnout in Statewide Primaries

Here's a 31-year history of the highs and lows of voter participation in statewide primary elections. How will tomorrow's Republican U.S. Senate primary stack up?

chart1

Methodology: Election turnout based on the total number of votes for all candidates shown in official results published by the Virginia State Department of Elections. For primary results in 2007 and later, VPAP used the total number of ballots cast in the primary. For primary dates prior to 2007, where a political party had more than one statewide office on the ballot, VPAP used the election with the most votes cast.

Note: Here are other statewide primaries that took place simultaneously with those shown in the chart above:

  • 2001 - Democratic Lt. Governor
  • 2005 - GOP Lt. Governor; Attorney General
  • 2005 - Democratic Attorney General
