My Candidate -- or No One
In addition to voting for their top choice, delegates to the state GOP convention were given the opportunity to rank the remaining candidates in order of preference. But some delegates marked a single candidate -- an "all or nothing" approach. Once their candidate was eliminated, these ballots were considered 'exhausted' and no longer counted.
'Exhausted' Ballots by Candidate
Source: May 8 convention results provided by the Republican Party of Virginia.
Notes:: RPV results do not indicate how many exhausted ballots included only a single candidate. Some of the incomplete ballots could have been exhausted after a delegate's second or third choice was eliminated. For example, a delegate could mark two candidates in the Governor's contest: Sergio de la Pena, first, and Amanda Chase, second. After de la Pena was eliminated in Round 3, the ballot would have been reallocated to Chase. It would have been only after Chase was eliminated in Round 4 that the ballot would have been exhausted, because no third choice was indicated.
