Republicans Gain Among Provisional Voters

While the majority of provisional votes continued to go to the Democratic candidate for president in 2024, Republicans saw their largest share of provisional votes since at least 2016.

As a result of a new law implemented in 2022, eligible voters who are not registered to vote are able to apply to register to vote at their polling location and cast their vote by provisional ballot. This process led to a massive increase in provisional ballots, especially in localities with large college populations.

Provisional Ballot Results

Notes: Excludes elections in 2019 and 2023, which did not have Republican and Democratic candidates on the ballot for the entire state.
